Task Tracking
Tracking tasks keeps you informed about what has been done, what is in progress, and what remains. Nembl provides visibility into task status at every level, from individual tasks to the overall request.
Task Statuses
Every task moves through these statuses:
Open
The task has been created and assigned but work has not started yet. It sits in the assignee's inbox waiting to be picked up.
In Progress
The assignee has started working on the task. They clicked Start or began updating the task, which moves it from Open to In Progress. This signals to the team that someone is actively working on it.
Completed
The task is done. The assignee clicked Complete to mark it finished. Completed tasks remain visible in the request's task list for reference, with a checkmark showing they are done.
Completing a Task
To mark a task as complete:
- Open the task from your inbox or the request's task list.
- Review your work to make sure everything is done.
- Click Complete.
- Optionally add a completion note describing what was done or any follow-up needed.
Once you complete a task, it is removed from your active inbox items and the request's progress is updated.
Auto-Status Sync with Requests
Tasks and their parent request stay in sync automatically:
- When all tasks are completed, the request can advance to its next workflow phase or move to Completed status (depending on the workflow configuration).
- When a task status changes, the request timeline is updated so everyone following the request can see the progress.
- When a request is cancelled, all open tasks within it are also cancelled. You do not need to close them individually.
This means you do not have to manually update the request when you finish tasks. The system keeps everything aligned.
Viewing Task Progress
From Your Dashboard
Your dashboard shows your assigned tasks in the My Tasks section. You can see:
- All tasks assigned to you across every request.
- Current status of each task.
- Priority and due date.
- The parent request for context.
From the Request Detail
Open any request and go to the Tasks tab to see all tasks for that request:
- Which tasks are complete (shown with a checkmark).
- Which tasks are in progress (highlighted).
- Which tasks are still waiting to be started.
- Who is assigned to each task.
This view gives the request owner and the team a clear picture of overall progress.
From the Team Inbox
Team leads can see all tasks assigned to their team members. This helps with:
- Identifying bottlenecks where tasks are stuck.
- Balancing workload across the team.
- Spotting overdue tasks that need attention.
Task Notifications
You receive notifications for task-related events:
- New task assigned — A task was assigned to you.
- Task reassigned — A task was moved to someone else.
- Task completed — A task you are following was completed.
- Task overdue — A task passed its due date without being completed.
See Notification Preferences to customize which task notifications you receive.
Overdue Tasks
If a task has a due date and that date passes without the task being completed, it is flagged as overdue. Overdue tasks:
- Appear with a visual indicator in your inbox and dashboard.
- Trigger a notification to the assignee and optionally to the team lead.
- Show up in team reports so managers can address delays.
If you know a task will be late, update the due date or add a comment explaining the delay. Communication prevents unnecessary escalations.
Tips for Staying on Top of Tasks
- Check your dashboard daily. Your My Tasks section is the quickest way to see everything you need to do.
- Mark tasks In Progress when you start working on them. This lets your team know you are on it.
- Complete tasks promptly. When you finish the work, mark the task complete right away so the request can keep moving.
- Add completion notes. A brief note about what was done saves time if someone has questions later.
- Communicate early about delays. If a task is going to take longer than expected, add a comment or talk to your team lead before the due date passes.
